EARLY LIFE:

Bennett was born in Penwortham and lived in Preston, Lancashire until the age of six, when he moved to Wales with his family. Bennett was inspired by his idol Davey Boy Smith to become a professional wrestler, and has named the WWF Intercontinental Championship match in the main event of SummerSlam Bennett gained a degree in marine biology from University of Liverpool. He worked in a science laboratory and later as a Recruitment Consultant at Venn Group's London Office, while training to become a wrestler.

Bareknuckle Boxing

While living in Liverpool in his early twenties, Bennett became a champion bare-knuckle boxer, going on to fight in various locations throughout Europe. He competed in a match dubbed by the bare knuckle underworld as "The Battle of Buda", in which he defeated a reputable opponent for a considerable cash prize. Afterwards, as he walked through an alleyway in search of a taxi to the airport, Bennett was stabbed with an eight-inch blade by an assailant who attempted to steal the cash. He has neglected to elaborate on the incident for legal reasons, but the assailant incurred serious injuries, and Bennett escaped with the cash despite significant blood loss. The attack left him with a twelve-inch scar that stretches from his upper back to halfway down the triceps of his right arm, and an accumulation of blows during his bare knuckle career left him with a disfigured nose, but he has expressed no regret over that period of his life, saying, "I had a lot of success and eventually got to fight for some pretty big money."
Bennett incorporated his bare-knuckle boxing career into his WWE gimmick at the urging of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, being introduced to the WWE audience as a European bare-knuckle fighting champion who had fought on the streets of England and Europe. His "Wasteland" manoeuvre is named after the site of many of his fights on the wastelands of Europe

PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING CAREER

Debut

Bennett decided to become a professional wrestler at the age of 21, and was trained by Jon Ritchie and Al Snow. He made his professional wrestling debut in June 2004, using the ring name "Stu Sanders",as a surprise entrant in a 30-man battle royal held by NWA UK Hammerlock Wrestling. Sanders also performed at numerous Dropkixx Wrestling and All Star Wrestling events, as well as wrestling in Wales for Welsh Wrestling. In June 2005 he beat Jeffin Beckwith for the Dropkixx IWC Heavyweight Championship.

Development Territories

Bennett participated in a tryout with WWE in November 2006 after appearing as part of a security team on the November 13 episode of Raw along with Sheamus in Manchester, England. He had another tryout in 2007, and signed a developmental contract with them in October. He was assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) under his Stu Sanders ring name, where he was defeated by Ace Steel in a dark match. He later formed a tag team with Paul Burchill and the pair faced the Major Brothers in several matches. On 2 January 2008 Sanders and Burchill defeated Colt Cabana and Charles Evans in the final of a tournament for the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship. Sanders and Burchill held the title for nearly two months before losing it to Los Locos (Ramón and Raúl) in a four-way match also involving The Insurgency (Ali and Omar Akbar) and The Mobile Homers (Ted McNaler and Adam Revolver).
After WWE ended their relationship with OVW as a developmental territory, Sanders was moved to Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) with several other wrestlers. On 6 May 2008, Sanders and Drew McIntyre, collectively known as The Empire, defeated The Puerto Rican Nightmares (Eddie Colón and Eric Pérez) to win the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship. They lost the titles back to the Nightmares at FCW's first TV taping on 17 July. The team broke up after the loss, and Sanders began wrestling under his real name before changing it to Lawrence Knight at the 9 October FCW television taping. On 19 February 2009, Knight announced that he was the new FCW commentator, alongside Dusty Rhodes. He became colour commentator due to an injury, in which he tore his Latissimus dorsi muscle and required surgery. In August 2009, Bennett was renamed yet again to Wade Barrett, partially named for Wade Dooley. Bennett describes the character of Barrett as being "an extension of his dark side". He returned to in-ring competition in FCW in December 2009.

WWE Milestones

The Next Breakout Star
Following a grueling season where Barrett is a clear standout from day one, he is declared the winner of WWE NXT's first season. As a result, Barrett is guaranteed a future championship match. On his path to victory, Barrett defeats Daniel Bryan in his debut match, is often ranked highly in the Pros' Poll, and wins several competitions including the Talk the Talk Challenge to earn his own entrance theme.

Winds of Change
The week after winning the first season of NXT, Barrett, along with his NXT compatriots, invades the main event of Raw between John Cena and CM Punk. Together, the group that comes to be known as The Nexus wreaks havoc around the ringside area, assaulting personnel, and destroying equipment. Over the following months, Barrett leads The Nexus  in changing Raw's landscape by dominating the roster.

Reporting for Duty
The Nexus’s main target on Raw became John Cena, who successfully led a team of WWE Superstars to victory against The Nexus in an Elimination Match at SummerSlam. Two months later, Barrett faces Cena in singles competition at WWE Hell in a Cell with plenty at stake. If Cena wins, The Nexus must disband, but due to Barrett’s victory, Cena is forced to reluctantly join the black and yellow as Barrett’s subordinate.

Corre Four
Barrett is banished from Raw, and ventures to SmackDown with former Nexus allies Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater. The trio adds the physically imposing Ezekiel Jackson to join their ranks, forming The Corre. A more streamlined version of Barrett’s previous Nexus stable, The Corre makes their presence felt on SmackDown by interfering in matches and engaging in post-match attacks.

Truly Intercontinental
After more than a year of dominating performances and being one of the most commanding figures in recent WWE history, Barrett finally wears championship gold when he defeats Kofi Kingston for the Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown. The Manchester, England native holds the title for nearly three months before losing it to his former Corre partner, Ezekiel Jackson.

The Barrett Barrage
Barrett sets out to annihilate anyone in his path and defeats Superstars including Daniel Bryan, John Morrison and Sheamus. He labels this crusade as The Barrett Barrage, and focuses next on Randy Orton. Their rivalry reaches a fever pitch during a Falls Count Anywhere Match on SmackDown, which concludes when Barrett sends Orton down a flight of stairs. Barrett flees, leaving WWE’s Apex Predator laying.

Injury and Return

On the February 20 episode of Raw, Barrett suffered an partially dislocated elbow after Big Show threw Dolph Ziggler onto Barrett during a 10-man battle royal, and was thus taken off television. In August 2012, WWE aired vignettes promoting Barrett's return, showing Barrett fighting at an underground fight club in an attempt to "reignite the flame". Barrett made his return on the September 7 episode of SmackDown, quickly defeating Yoshi Tatsu in a squash match. Following his return, Barrett would go on an undefeated streak, defeating the likes of Justin Gabriel, Tyson Kidd, and various other competitors. Barrett suffered his first defeat since his return to the WWE in a Lumberjack Match against the World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus.
